Discovering and developing innovative ideas: As a doctoral student at the SMBS, you are working directly with the supervising university professors on your doctoral thesis. The doctoral program supports you scientifically and enables you to network and exchange experience with other doctoral students.

In 3 years to Ph.D. in International Business Management

The doctoral program with a focus on international business management is divided into doctoral seminars, conference assignments, doctoral theses, publications as well as teaching activities and the doctoral thesis (doctoral thesis). 6 research seminars (18-20 attendance days) are held in the first 4 semesters at SMBS in Salzburg. In the third year of study, a study stay of at least 4 weeks is planned at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) in Brisbane.

Research project, ongoing evaluations, double-teaching with a professor from a German-speaking country, as well as a professor / professor of the USC

Aims

The SMBS – University of Salzburg Business School – offers qualified professionals executive promotion to the Ph.D.. The research project with a concrete issue definition from practice and the accompanying colloquia form the basis of the dissertation for the Ph.D..

The doctorate is characterized by practice-oriented research, transfer-oriented research management and competent project management. A scientific network is available to support the knowledge acquisition, support and transfer.

 

Content

Year 1

This seminar introduces students to the philosophy of research, research
ethics, approaches to framing questions and designing research,
proposal writing, sampling, and data collection methods.

Graduate-level introduction to critical issues in research methodology relevant for the social sciences. Special focus will be on theory-driven, qualitative and quantitative approaches to research.

Students learn to analyze data in the performance of business research using advanced statistical methods. Students will formulate models, use software to determine optimal model parameters, and analyze the results for validity.

Topic Proposal; Literature Review; Development of Research Question and Theoretical Background

Year 2

This course introduces students to linear and non-linear regression models for the analysis of quantitative data and provides in-depth knowledge of advanced statistical methods, including SEM and econometric modelling.

This seminar explores the prominent perspectives of international theorists and researchers in HRM and OB literature. Students will work to build a foundation with which they can build their own research agendas regarding business management in a global context.

Graduate-level introduction to social and industrial- organizational psychology. Emphasis on major theories, issues, and literature regarding social psychology and organizational behavior in domestic and international contexts.

Theoretical module / Hypothesis Development, Research Design

Year 3

Doctoral seminar / Research workshops
(duration: ca. 4 weeks)

Essentially, the fee-based study course comprises doctoral seminars, participation in conferences / doctoral workshops and publications, teaching activities and the doctorate thesis (dissertation). The 6 research seminars held in Salzburg and/or Munich during the first 4 semesters are each 2 to 3 days long. Furthermore, a study trip to the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) in Brisbane will take place in the 5th or 6th semester.

The doctoral thesis / dissertation is developed in the form of a research project and is central to the study course. Project progress and the correct approach to the research project are accompanied by regular evaluation meetings. From the very start, candidates are provided with dual supervision by an SMBS professor from a German-speaking country, as well as a USC professor.
